Plumbing is the most emergency driven trade in Australia, and that single fact should determine how a plumber approaches search.
When someone has water coming through the ceiling, they do not read your About page. They do not compare three quotes. They open Google, look at the first two or three results that seem credible, and call. The entire decision takes under a minute.
That changes what matters. For a builder, ranking well and then nurturing an enquiry over six months is the game. For a plumber, ranking well is worth nothing if the phone rings out. Your SEO and your answering process are the same system.
This guide covers the plumbing specifics. The general framework for Google Business Profile setup, review systems and site structure is in our SEO for tradies guide.

Note the cost per click figures. “Emergency plumber” at $9 and “blocked drain plumber” at $8 are among the most expensive clicks in the Australian trades. Advertisers do not pay that unless the leads convert. That is a strong signal about where the value sits.
Note also that hot water system replacement is genuinely competitive, unlike almost everything else on this list. The results for that term are full of manufacturers and large retailers rather than local plumbers. Do not attack it head on. Target “hot water system replacement [your suburb]” and “hot water system repair”, where local plumbers can win.
The answer speed problem
This is the part of plumbing SEO that most agencies never mention, and it costs more jobs than any ranking factor.
An emergency plumbing searcher typically calls two or three businesses in quick succession and books whoever answers first with a credible time. If your phone rings out, they do not leave a message and wait. They call the next result.
So before spending on rankings, sort out these:
- Answer during business hours, every time. If you are under a house, an answering service is cheaper than the jobs you are missing.
- Decide honestly about after hours. If you genuinely take 2am calls, say so and charge for it. If you do not, do not advertise 24/7. Setting “open 24 hours” on your Google Business Profile when nobody answers generates one star reviews from people who were never customers.
- Have a fallback for missed calls. An automated SMS (“Sorry we missed you, we’re on a job. Reply with your suburb and problem and we’ll call within 15 minutes”) recovers a meaningful share of lost enquiries.
- Give an after hours web path. People who cannot get through will fill in a form if one is obvious. Make sure the form is visible without scrolling on mobile.
Google Business Profile ranking is also influenced by responsiveness signals. Missed calls hurt twice.
Build pages around symptoms, not services
Plumbing customers describe problems, not solutions. They search “toilet won’t stop running”, “water coming through ceiling”, “no hot water”, “drain smells”, “gurgling sink”, “water meter spinning with taps off”.
A page titled “Plumbing Services” matches none of that. Structure your key pages around the symptom language instead.
Emergency plumbing page. Cover the specific situations in separate sections: burst pipes, water through the ceiling, blocked toilet, no water at all, gas smell. Each section names the symptom, tells them what to do right now (turn off the water at the meter, turn off the gas at the meter, do not use electrical switches near water), and then gives your phone number.
That “what to do right now” content is genuinely useful, which is the point. It also tends to be what AI generated answers and featured snippets pull from, and it builds trust in the twenty seconds before someone dials.
Blocked drains page. Combined, “blocked drain” and “blocked drain plumber” draw around 4,000 monthly searches at very low difficulty. Cover the causes (tree roots, wet wipes, grease, collapsed pipes), the diagnosis method (CCTV drain camera), the solutions (hydro jetting, root cutting, pipe relining versus excavation), and rough costs for each. Pipe relining in particular is a high value job that customers research heavily and few plumber sites explain properly.
Hot water page. Split repair from replacement. Repair searches are urgent and cheaper jobs. Replacement searches are considered purchases worth several thousand dollars. Cover the decision customers are actually making: gas versus electric versus heat pump versus solar, running cost differences, what size suits how many people, current rebates in your state, and whether it can be replaced in the same spot or needs relocation.
Heat pump hot water deserves particular attention. Rebates have driven demand, the units cost more, and most plumber websites have almost nothing about them.
Gas work is a separate ranking opportunity
“Gas fitter” draws 1,100 monthly Australian searches at essentially zero difficulty, and gas work is a licensed specialisation that not every plumber holds.
If you are licensed for gas, build a dedicated page covering gas appliance installation, gas leak detection, gas hot water, cooktop and oven connection, gas compliance certificates, and gas line installation for extensions. State your gas licence number.
Gas leak searches are urgent and high intent. A page that opens with clear safety instructions (turn off at the meter, do not operate switches, ventilate, leave the property if the smell is strong) before your contact details will be more useful and more trusted than one that leads with a sales pitch.
Compliance and property manager work
The steadiest plumbing revenue does not come from homeowners in a panic. It comes from repeat commercial relationships.
Property managers need reliable plumbers for rental maintenance, and requirements vary by state. Victoria, for example, has rental minimum standards covering hot water and water efficiency. A page written specifically for property managers, covering response times, invoicing arrangements, compliance documentation and after hours capability, speaks to a buyer who books repeatedly and rarely negotiates on price.
Backflow prevention testing is an annual compliance requirement for many commercial properties, requires specific endorsement, and produces recurring work. It is barely contested in search.
Water efficiency and compliance certificates for property sales and rentals are another steady, low competition category.
These pages will never bring the traffic that “emergency plumber” does. They bring better customers.
Schema markup for plumbers
Use the specific Plumber type:
{
“@context”: “https://schema.org”,
“@type”: “Plumber”,
“name”: “Your Plumbing Business”,
“telephone”: “+61-3-XXXX-XXXX”,
“priceRange”: “$$”,
“areaServed”: [
{ “@type”: “City”, “name”: “Coburg” },
{ “@type”: “City”, “name”: “Northcote” }
],
“hasOfferCatalog”: {
“@type”: “OfferCatalog”,
“name”: “Plumbing Services”,
“itemListElement”: [
{ “@type”: “Offer”, “itemOffered”: { “@type”: “Service”, “name”: “Emergency Plumbing” } },
{ “@type”: “Offer”, “itemOffered”: { “@type”: “Service”, “name”: “Blocked Drain Clearing” } },
{ “@type”: “Offer”, “itemOffered”: { “@type”: “Service”, “name”: “Hot Water System Replacement” } }
]
}
}
If you genuinely operate 24 hours, express that in openingHoursSpecification with opens 00:00 and closes 23:59. Only if you genuinely do.
Plumbing demand is seasonal, and you should plan for it
|
Period |
Demand spike |
What to prepare |
|
Nov to Feb |
Storm damage, blocked stormwater drains, roof plumbing |
Stormwater and roof plumbing pages ready by October |
|
Dec to Jan |
Holiday period blockages, guests overloading systems |
Emergency availability, after hours messaging |
|
Mar to May |
Gutter and downpipe, pre winter checks, tree root intrusion |
Drain and root content, maintenance offers |
|
Jun to Aug |
Hot water failures, burst pipes in cold snaps, heating |
Hot water replacement content at full strength |
The planning rule: pages take three to six months to rank, so build them well before the season. A hot water replacement page published in June is competing at peak demand with nothing established. Published in February, it has time to mature.
Seasonal reactivation works well for plumbers. A message to your past customers in April offering a pre winter hot water check produces booked work in a normally quiet period.
Reviews matter more in plumbing than most trades
Emergency customers choose from a map pack in seconds, and reviews are the main differentiator visible in that moment. A plumber with 90 reviews at 4.8 beats one with 12 reviews at 5.0 nearly every time, because volume reads as established.
Build the ask into the job. Send the review link by SMS the same afternoon, while the relief of having hot water again is fresh. Emergency jobs actually generate stronger reviews than planned work, because the emotional swing is bigger. Ask on those especially.
Reply to every review. For a plumber, a calm reply to a complaint about a callout fee reassures more prospects than the complaint costs you.
A realistic build order
- Google Business Profile completed, with “Plumber” as primary category and real hours
- Missed call SMS fallback set up before spending anything on traffic
- Emergency plumbing page, symptom by symptom
- Blocked drains page, including pipe relining
- Hot water page, split into repair and replacement
- Gas fitting page if licensed
- Suburb pages for three to five priority areas
- Property manager page
Frequently asked questions
What is the most valuable plumbing keyword in Australia?
By volume, “plumber near me” at 17,000 monthly searches. By commercial value, “emergency plumber” and “blocked drain plumber”, where advertisers pay $8 to $9 per click because the leads convert.
Should plumbers advertise 24/7 service?
Only if you genuinely answer. Advertising round the clock availability and not answering produces negative reviews and damages your Google Business Profile ranking, which costs more than the jobs gained.
How do I compete with the big plumbing franchises?
On suburb level searches, not city wide ones. A local plumber with strong reviews and genuine suburb pages regularly outranks national brands in the map pack, because proximity and local relevance carry real weight.
Is it worth targeting hot water system replacement?
The generic term is contested by manufacturers and large retailers. The local variants (“hot water system replacement [suburb]”) and the repair variants are winnable and attach to the same jobs.
How fast can a plumber see SEO results?
Google Business Profile improvements often show within two to six weeks, which matters because the map pack drives most emergency calls. Service pages take three to six months.
