It is not. A sole trader sparky doing $180,000 a year and a six van plumbing operation doing $2.4 million have almost nothing in common in terms of what they should spend money on.

The sole trader does not need a brand strategy. They need the phone to ring next Tuesday. The six van operation does not need more leads at any price. They need better leads, a booking system that does not rely on the owner’s memory, and a way to stop competing on price.

This guide sorts the decisions by business stage, then lays out what to do across a year. id="First_know_your_two_numbers">First, know your two numbers

Almost no tradie can answer these two questions, and every marketing decision depends on them.

Average job value. Total revenue divided by number of jobs, over the last twelve months. Include the small callouts that drag it down.

Cost per booked job, by source. What you spent on a channel divided by jobs actually won from it. Not leads. Jobs.

That second number is where platform leads look worse than they first appear. If a shared lead costs $50 and you win one in three, your cost per booked job is $150 before you count the hours spent quoting the two you lost. Against a job worth $400, that is a thin margin on work you did not enjoy chasing.

Once you know these numbers, marketing stops being a matter of opinion.

Stage 1: Sole trader, under about $250k

Your constraint is time, not budget. No social media strategy, no blog, no brand refresh.

The Google Business Profile is the highest return activity available to a sole trader, and it is free. Complete every field, choose the most specific primary category, set service areas by suburb rather than a radius, and add job photos weekly. Our Google Business Profile optimisation checklist has the full setup.

The review system is not optional. Send a review link by SMS the same afternoon you finish a job. Twenty minutes to set up, then twenty seconds per job. It drives your map pack ranking, your close rate, and your ability to charge more, all at once.

What to skip at this stage: Instagram, TikTok, printed brochures, a logo redesign, sponsorship of anything, and any agency retainer above a few hundred dollars a month.

Stage 2: Two to five crew, roughly $250k to $1m

Now you have capacity to fill and someone other than you answering the phone. The constraint shifts from time to lead quality and consistency.

Add, in this order:

Proper service and suburb page structure on the website. This is where organic search starts producing. Twelve to eighteen pages built around the jobs you want, not the jobs you can do.

Google Ads on your highest value services. Not everything. Pick the two or three job types with the best margin and bid on those. Emergency work and high value replacements first.

A quoting system with follow up. Most trade businesses lose more revenue to unfollowed quotes than to lost leads. A quote that gets one follow up call at day three converts noticeably better than one that sits in an inbox.

A database and a reason to contact it. Every past customer is a future job. An annual service reminder, a safety check offer, a seasonal prompt.

Budget guidance at this stage: somewhere between 3% and 7% of revenue is a common range for trade businesses actively growing. On $600,000 revenue that is $18,000 to $42,000 a year, or roughly $1,500 to $3,500 a month across all channels.

Spend it roughly like this: 40% on search (SEO plus Google Ads), 25% on the website as an ongoing asset, 20% on retention and referral systems, 15% on local presence including signage and sponsorship.

Stage 3: Six or more crew, $1m plus

You have lead flow. Your problems are now margin, capacity planning and competing against operations with bigger budgets.

What changes:

Segment by job profitability, not job volume. Stop advertising the $180 callouts and put budget behind the $4,000 installs. This usually means separate campaigns, separate landing pages and sometimes separate service pages.

Commercial and strata work. Different search behaviour, longer contracts, far less price sensitivity. Requires its own pages and a different proof set (insurance levels, compliance documentation, references).

Brand becomes worth something. At this size, people recognising your vans matters. Vehicle livery, uniforms and consistent local presence start to compound with your search presence.

Content marketing becomes viable. You now have enough margin to fund a blog that earns traffic over 12 to 24 months rather than needing returns this quarter.

Social ads for planned work. Renovations, outdoor living, solar and battery, air conditioning before summer. Search cannot reach people who have not decided yet. Facebook and Instagram ads can.

The seasonal calendar

Australian trade demand is highly seasonal and most tradies react to it rather than planning for it. Builders refer both. Real estate property managers refer everyone. Three good trade relationships can carry a sole trader’s entire pipeline.

Reactivate old customers. A message to everyone you worked for two years ago, offering a check or service, costs nothing and typically produces work within a fortnight.

Property managers deserve specific attention. A single agency managing 400 rentals generates a constant stream of maintenance jobs, pays reliably, and does not haggle. Winning two property managers can change a small trade business more than any advertising campaign.

Where offline and online connect

Trade businesses have physical presence that most industries do not, and it is usually wasted.

Vehicle signage. Your van sits outside a job for six hours in a street where people are noticing it. Put the trade, the suburb, the phone number and the licence number on it, in that order of size. Skip the website URL if space is tight, because people search your business name rather than typing a URL from memory. That makes your Google Business Profile the thing they land on, which is another reason it needs to be complete.

Job site signage. A corflute sign on a fence during a two week job is seen by everyone in the street.

Uniforms and cleanliness. These are marketing. The tradie who puts down a drop sheet and cleans up gets the review and the referral.

Local sponsorship. The junior footy club costs a few hundred dollars and produces a local backlink plus genuine community recognition. Both matter.

The 12 month plan

For a two to five crew business starting close to scratch:

Months 1 to 2. Google Business Profile completed. Review system running. Baseline numbers recorded (average job value, current cost per booked job). Website audited.

Months 3 to 5. Service pages built, one per target job type. Top three suburb pages. Tap-to-call and quote form fixed. Google Ads launched on two highest value services.

Months 6 to 8. Review volume steady. Ad campaigns optimised using search terms data. First suburb pages ranking. Customer database organised. Trade referral partnerships approached.

Months 9 to 12. Seasonal campaigns planned in advance. Expand service pages based on what converted. Reactivation campaign to past customers. Commercial or strata pages if relevant.

Review the two numbers quarterly. If cost per booked job is falling and job value is holding, the plan is working.
